Your Questions About How To Discover New Artists

Donna asks…

What are some good websites where I can discover metal and read news about metal bands?

I’ve been looking for weeks to find a decent website that has news about popular metal bands and such. I’ve tried mtv but well we all know how they are when it comes to metal or even rock in general…
The only place I’ve been able to find more metal artists are through youtube or on the radio… So does anyone know some popular sites that are for rock and metal?

New Niche Finder answers:

For a more surface level news/reviews/tour-info sort of site I recommend Blabbermouth. They have pretty great coverage of the bigger metal bands, an active fan community, and writers who know what they’re talking about, if nothing else, to a degree you can’t find on a website not committed to metal. There’s lots of variance on their coverage of the big 80’s bands to new and popular core bands, thrash bands, power metal bands, black metal bands, and so on. It’s interesting to check in on ever now and then, even for me.

Personally, my favorite metal site is Encyclopedia Metallum, which is actually at www.Metal-Arhives.com (note the hyphen). It’s not as news oriented, or as user-friendly, but it really shines in allowing you to find great new bands if you’re into less “commercial” or well-known bands. Basically every metal band which has ever released music is on the site, all uploaded by the fan community, which is fantastic because the database is both incredibly large and still not totally out of hand and full of short lived solo projects that never accomplished anything other than to come up with a name like “Dark Shadow Candle-Burn Glow.” Each band is required to have released music, then they’re given a brief page and a full discography, which has often really insightful fan reviews. Another neat feature is that it tells you what other bands members of a given band are in, which is a fantastic way to discover new and better music. Like Dragonforce? The Bassist used to be the lead guitarist in a really sick French band called Heavenly, their best album is Dust to Dust. Like Finntroll? The main-songwriter is also the main-songwriter of a darker and more epic band called Moonsorrow. So on and so forth.

But again, I recommend BlabberMouth over anything else for a more entry level, user-friendly, news-heavy metal fan site.

Thomas asks…

Do you know and progressive metal bands similar to Queensryche?

I’ve really gotten into progressive metal over the last few years, and though I’ve discovered many great artists (Kamelot, Amorphis, Dream Theater etc) none of them have quite been up to the standard of Queenryche.
So, does anybody know any progressive metal bands, old or recent, that can equal the brilliance of Queensyche?

New Niche Finder answers:

Queensryche sort of has a dark 80’s hard rock sound, so you won’t really get a taste of that with newer bands. I really like Queensryche and I know tons of 80’s rock groups from their era. These are some of my favorites with a similar sound that you might like –

Vinnie Vincent Invasion
Skid Row
Danger Danger

Hope that helps and rock on!

What are some methods of discovering new music?

I find it difficult to branch out and find different genres and artists that I like. My ipod is getting a little stale. I’m not looking for suggestions of specific artists, but means of finding them.

New Niche Finder answers:

Google it , do listen lots of musics , read lots of music related books , join in music class , or try yourself by practicing in piano if u have one .

Where is the weirdest place you have discovered an artist/band?

I was in Barnes and Noble one day with my
friend, and I heard this really awesome song come on…
I went to the cashier and asked her who were singing, and
she said it was a band called Beach House. If you love soft relaxing music
you should really check them out. They are awesome!!!

So yeah, I discovered Beach House in Barnes and Nobel.

Why cant successful music artists represent countries in the Eurovision?

Say, Lily Allen or some other British music artist. Why can’t they represent us? I mean Abba did and we won. Is there some rule about how famous the singer can get?

New Niche Finder answers:

Because they’d automatically win, it would be too easy and a bit one sided. It’s like getting professional footballers to play against a team off people who only just discovered football yesterday
