How do artists get ideas of what to draw?

Hi, i’m very into painting recently, and i’m pretty skilled too. But when i sit there and draw whatever i want, i get stuck and feel like i’ve lost all my painting abilities. Although i do have some ideas they are’t clear enough therefore its hard to transform it into a painting.
So my question is, How do great artists like Salvador Dali get their ideas of what to draw? or if you’re an artist i’ll also appreciate if you would like to share how you get ideas, and transform them into paintings.

New Niche Finder answers:

I can’t over emphasize how formal training will help you express your ideas. So much of Art is technique and this can be learned. The creative side is what separates genius from talented and less skilled. There are countless books on painting techniques as well as dvds and even quite a few helpful vids on Youtube but nothing compares to the benefits of having a highly talented instructor at your side.
As for ideas there are as many sources as your mind can deal with. You can be inspired by things which surround you, studying the works of masters ( such as Dali ), or even reading and discovering a subject hidden within the pages, among the type that is begging to be drawn, painted, inked, pasteled or even sculpted.
You will learn that the main problem will usually be yourself. You must will the courage to complete the project regardless if it ends up bad. You can always start it over again and with each error you learn and progress.
Persevere and good luck.

I have artist block for almost a year and a half?

I’ve been stuck for almost a year and a half, I am able to do observational drawings assignments for my art school except using my own imagination and creativity. I have failed a few assignments last year and was able to get an exceptional grade for another assignment but it wasn’t my best. When I do have an idea, it goes away quickly before I’m able to remember it and write it down or it doesn’t seem appealing anymore. What should I do to prevent artist block? I have always loved art but now it seems I’m unable to do it? I would like to get back on my feet.

This happens often.
I bought this book recently… Http://www.awesomebooks.com/book/9781401307929/the-creative-license-giving-yourself-permission-to/?c=1

It’s very good and inspiring.

Also, I am about to start a course called The Artist’s Way…. Http://juliacameronlive.com/
It is based on a book she wrote for blocked creatives…. Http://www.amazon.co.uk/Artists-Way-Discovering-Recovering-Creative/dp/0330343580

I hope this helps. With time and patience, you will definitely draw as much as you like again. :-)
Goo luck. :-)

Chris asks…

Have you ever discovered a popular artist’s music or other work after they have passed on?

One artist that I became familiar with was in the early 80’s, Mary Robbins, his song “El Paso”. If you have never heard this song, look it up and it will knock your socks off. If you like music it will. They were playing his music right after he died. He was very successful in the country music world then he started racing autos. Cool stuff.

New Niche Finder answers:

Carl Perkins. He was a very underrated artist.
