Your Questions About How To Discover New Artists

Steven asks…

Is there any free music forums where i can discover new music?

i like listening to metal, techno, rock and a little rap.

I listen to pandora a lot and i was wondering if there was a forum or chat rooms where i can chat with people and get new music artist to discover.

New Niche Finder answers:

Take a look at my blog, djsparrowreplay.com. The style of music I track is closer to dance or hip hop than rap or rock, and there’s very little techno or metal, but there’s enough of an overlap that I still feature artists from other genres from time to time. For example, I recently posted on Shyne’s comeback.

Almost every day I publish a link to a new song that I like and think will be big. What’s particularly good about my blog is that it is still new, so there are no ads, and I update every day. Kinda hard to beat that! Also, I have a feature called “Parrot Watch” that might provide some entertainment.

I would also like to move towards viewer participation so you can post your own opinions on any article by just filling in a box, no account or email address required. Eventually I’d like to make the new track ratings voteable by the userbase just by clicking a button.

Hope you like it!

[EDIT: I forgot to mention, there is a blogroll along the side of my site, so even if you don’t find my posts useful, there are links like 2dopeboyz and missinfo.tv that might be more your style!]

Daniel asks…

On Youtube, what do I have to do to get my videos discovered by celebrities?

A couple years ago, I watched an episode of Oprah Winfrey in which she did a whole show on Youtube videos. On the show, I saw a girl singer that had her videos discovered by Justin Timberlake.

New Niche Finder answers:

Well, first off you need to be good at what you do. A lot of people sing on YouTube, but can you sing better?
If you think so, record it, upload it, and tag it. If an artist doesn’t have a YouTube, discovery will be hard. Also, if the artist doesn’t monitor their own account (has someone else update for them) you will most likely not be found. However, quite a few celebrities manage their own. A lot of the younger “celebrities” have more time to YouTube than the really famous ones.
(Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, most of those Disney kiddos, blahblah. For these people you can get noticed if you write a song for them or something and give it a cheesy title like “DEDICATED TO ___ ____)

Also, be on the lookout for contests. One Republic had one a while ago and watched a bunch of entries and selected one winner.
That would’ve been cool to win :)

How Long Have Been a Fan Of Your Favourite Artist?

It’s finally dawned on me that it’s 2013 and my favourite band The Smiths is 30 years old, oh boy and I’ve followed them for 29 of those years.

How many times have you seen your fave artist band live, favourite album, ever met them.

New Niche Finder answers:

Kind of hard to answer. Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks have been a part of my life before I even knew who they were. My mum would play Dreams a lot when I was only a baby and I’ve had a strong connection to both Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks ever since. It wasn’t until last year that I re-discovered their music and became an instant fan. I was having a really rough time trying to decide where my life was heading and their music really helped me cope through that rough patch. Now, I can’t go a day without listening to Stevie or the Mac. I always have their music to pick me up when I’m having a bad day : )

They’ll be touring next year and early 2014 I believe but tickets haven’t gone on sale yet for Australia. I’ll definitely be going and I’ll be in the front row cheering them on. Can’t wait!

George asks…

how do i discover undiscovered bands?

i want to know how to get a REALLY good band a record deal…
they are amazing and they are looking for a BIG break. How can i get a record company to sign them/discover them?

New Niche Finder answers:

The odds are always stacked against you. There are millions of musicians around the country who are looking for record deals too, but here are some important things that need to be done.

Promote! Promote! Promote!

Build a local fan base, try to get them to tell others. Giving away free CD’s is a great way to get a band’s name out there. They could record the CD’s themselves. I did it with my old band. Also, find out if your local radio station will play songs from your band. Sometimes radio stations will feature local artists. Also, internet radio is another way to promote their music. You can waste your time sending demos to record companies but alot of the stuff that is sent to record companies is never even listened to. They get swamped with demos. Even if they do listen, they will only listen for a few seconds. If it doesn’t strike them as GREAT in those first few seconds it’s trashed. Also, T-shirts, and stickers are a great way to promote and can be used to fund recording costs.

Hope some of this helps and Good Luck!
