Your Questions About How To Discover New Artists

Michael asks…

How can a young girl be discovered as a fine artist?

I am 18 and have been drawing my entire life, and I am very dedicated to the fine arts. I have mastered the human body, the face and nature. I am addicted to Art History but, I have to admit that I have dropped out of school. Twice. School has always been a challenge to me, because of my brutal case of dyslexia I don’t understand math, and I didn’t totally grasp reading until I was 7-years-old. I would like to know, even though I haven’t my full education, how to become noticed and discovered as an artist.
And I don’t know exactly if it will be harder for a young female to be taken seriously, but I have to say I’m a toss up between a female Michelangelo and da Vinci.
By the way, I am from Louisiana and the locals here are just crazy for the swamp scenes and that is very cheezy and overdone here. So I am not a custom to that local art that only people in south can appreciate.

You’d do better to stop looking for the quick payday.
The art world isn’t going to call you up and offer to make you famous. That’s a dream that makes people who dream of going to the NFL seem sane.

So you have a several choices.

Make art, get a job, and build a collection up. Then enter your work, until you get “discovered” and get your big show. With no credentials or contacts, this usually comes after you have a large body of work. Outsider artists are never discovered on one piece for instance.

Make art, pander, sell locally. Which means painting swamps, grizzlies, or dragons, if it sells. Plenty of artists make a living selling such things. The equivalent of the bar band playing the rolling stones. You can live off t shirts, just don’t expect to be selling your artistic vision.

Get an education. You can be a great artist, but that won’t get you commercial art gigs anymore. They want somebody who can draw art as well as the dozen other things any job involves.

Marry someone rich. An awful lot of artists did it in the past. Marry rich and start painting, then get someone to show your work for a donation.

Help me discover artists?

I need to find an artist to research and create an inspired piece of artwork based off of their work – can anyone recommend artists they enjoy? (fine or digital), i’m thinking more modern, but older is ok too.
or, if anyone knows of a website that might have a list of professional artists that would work too. thanks!

One of my favourite modern painters is Selena Boron.

Selena Boron is an Australian living artist whose beautiful, colourful paintings wonderfully combine photo-realism with abstract, not many artists are able to paint like that… Her paintings do not require too much complicated poetry or long descriptions to explain to viewers what they are all about, yet they still leave enough room for ones imagination and interpretation. Simply gorgeous – judge for yourself! You can view some of Selena Boron’s paintings on http://www.SelenaBoronArt.com .

How did you discover your favourite band/artist?

One day, I heard a song by Rush in one of my favourite TV shows, and I liked it, but didn’t have any incentive to search it up on YouTube or anything.

10 months later, I was on a plane which went halfway across Canada, and on long flights like these, there’s almost always some kind of touchscreen entertainment device in front of you, so I inevitably checked it out. I didn’t find any interesting movies or TV shows to watch on there, so I decided to see what kind of music was on there.

I didn’t find any albums by any artists I knew on it, aside from an album by Rush which contained that same song I heard 10 months ago. I thought “why not?”, plugged in my headphones, and pressed play. I didn’t really like most of the songs on it at first, aside from a couple, but the rest took a very short time to grow on me.

When I got home, I started to occasionally listen to Rush, and stopped liking them for a while, until I saw a link on TvTropes to one of their songs, which rekindled my love for their music, and I started to discover various other songs by them on my own.

I didn’t really become the hardcore fan I am now until a few months ago, when I bought the album I heard in the plane ride on CD, and bought their newest album a couple weeks later.

Florence and the Machine
I was browsing youtube and saw a video about Jane from twilight. The person who made the video used the song “Howl.” I would watch that video over and over. For a few months I didn’t listen to anything else by her but then decided to give it a shot. I slowly fell in love with her album Lungs, and now I know every lyric, every cover, and every interview she ever done.

BQ: Do you know anyone in real life who hates/also likes that band/artist? My old friwnd Claudia likes her, even though we dont talk much anymore we went to a Florence concert together.

BQ2: What’s your favourite song by them? (You don’t have to tell me why, but I’d love it if you would)
Right now it’s Rabbit Heart. Because I love the meaning of the song and the sounds incorporated in it.
BQ3: Have you ever heard one of their songs somewhere you wouldn’t have expected to hear it? (For example, you’re in a fast food place, and you hear a song by them playing on the radio in the background) Haha, yes. I heard Shake it Out in a coffee place. They usually play stuff like Call Me Maybe, so I was amused.

BQ4: Do you have any funny stories related to your fav. Band/artist? No.

BQ5: What’s one memorable thing that’s happened to you this Summer on Y!A or in reality?
Honestly nothing exciting happened this summer.
BQ6: What was the last thing you ate?
These things called macaroni balls. They’re really good.
BQ7: What was the last movie you watched?
Finding Nemo
BQ8: How’s your Summer so far?
Boring, so boring.
BQ9: Tell me anything that’s currently on your mind
If this girl is gonna break up with her boyfriend or not…

Sharon asks…

how does a artist get discovered?

how can i get discovered as an artist and sale my art?

New Niche Finder answers:

You don’t ever get discovered, as you said it, because no gallery owner or studio is expressly looking for you or starting artists.

What you need to do is market yourself, start visiting galleries and ask if they’re willing to host your work for a one night showing. Don’t start at the creme de la creme ones right at the start.

That’s what you need to do to get your work noticed.
