Your Questions About How To Discover New Books

Richard asks…

What are some books about teenagers running away?

Sort of like the book Smile for the Camera. Something about a teen running away from home. Nothing stupid or boring. No Harry Potter! I want something realistic.

New Niche Finder answers:

I’ve heard “Solace of the Road” Siobhan Dowd is pretty good for YA.

Holly’s story will leave a lasting impression on all who travel with her.

Memories of mum are the only thing that make Holly Hogan happy. She hates her foster family with their too-nice ways and their false sympathy. And she hates her life, her stupid school, and the way everyone is always on at her. Then she finds the wig, and everything changes. Wearing the long, flowing blond locks she feels transformed. She’s not Holly anymore, she’s Solace: the girl with the slinkster walk and the supersharp talk. She’s older, more confident—the kind of girl who can walk right out of her humdrum life, hitch to Ireland, and find her mum. The kind of girl who can face the world head-on.

So begins a bittersweet and sometimes hilarious journey as Solace swaggers and Holly tiptoes across England and through memory, discovering her true self and unlocking the secrets of her past.

Sharon asks…

What are some good young adult books?

I like books about troubled teens, with dysfunctional families and other problems.
Realistic fiction, with a twist of fantasy.
I’m really into books you can’t put down.

Some books I read and liked:
Hunger games and Catching fire by Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter
Candy by Kevin Brooks
Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin
Speak and Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
and so many more.

I read the twilight saga and they are absolute shit.

You must read John Marsden’s Tomorrow Series

There are seven books in total. In order these are.

Tomorrow, When the war Began
The Dead of Night
A Killing Frost
Darkness Be My Friend
Burning For Revenge
The Night is For Hunting
The Other Side of Dawn

It’s an Australian series is about how a group of teenagers survive when their country is invaded. It’s an emotional roller coaster of a read, in turns humorous, exhilarating, terrifying, brutal and heartbreaking.

By same author

So Much To Tell You (The diary of a girl who is mute by choice)

Letters From the Inside (best to go into this one with no idea what to expect)

Checkers (Diary of a teenage girl in a mental institution)

Dear Miffy (A series of letters written by a suicidal teenager. Huge content warning though, also a very love it or hate it book)

Other Authors

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (Death narrates the story of a young girl’s life during WWII)

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon (A teenage boy with Asperges syndrome sets out to discover who killed his neighbour’s dog)

Different Seasons by Stephen King (A collection of novella’s one of which became the film the Shawshank Redemption and another which became the movie Stand by Me. A bit of a content warning for this one too)

John asks…

How do you discover books?

I guess what I’m asking is how and where do you look up books, good books (though that is subjective), from the millions out there?

I’m currently studying film production and I’d love to get some more “knowledge” for screen writing purposes anyways.

Going back to the subjective matter, I know how everyone has different takes on different books, for example I’m into thriller/drama/noir genre, where do I look up the masterpieces the good ones, recommended ones. I’m just overwhelmed by the fact that there’s just so many.

New Niche Finder answers:

I find books all over the place, like you said there are so many out there, and I think it’s just luck when you find one you like.

I go to bookstores, libraries and used books stores and brows around to see if I find anything that catches my fancy, especially in second hand bookstores you’ll find a lot of off the charts books you wouldn’t find in mainstream literature.

I also look online to book reviews, top10 lists in different genras, and books that might be similar to some other themes I like. I subscirbe to some litterature review sites so I’m updated on the big mainstream books.

I also like amazons recommendations and similar features, that shows you books that you might like based on the books you like/buy.

I also get reccomendations from friends and family, my aunt worked in a bookshop so I got a lot of books from her.

Basically all over the place, some of my favorite books I’ve found by accidents!

To look for good books in your favorite themes I’d look to sites or forums dedicated to that genra, or top 10 lists. Look to several different ones, and you’ll probably see some titles popping up often, those which are reccomended by several sources are most likely good ones.

I don’t know enough about film production to reccomend anything, but perhaps it would be an idea to ask your proffesor or other students? Or go to a bookshop and see what they will reccomend!

Good luck
