Your Questions About How To Discover New Elements

Linda asks…

How many elements have been discovered thus far?

For science homework I have to find out how many elements are now on the present periodic table. I researched and found 123, but a friend of mine found 112. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

God bless!

Susan asks…

Which elements do they suspect make up a large part of the outer planets?

Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus have much different elemental compositions?

how so?
and how can they tell?

please explain.

ANOTHER QUESTION: are same elements here on earth found on other planets or entirely different elements?

New Niche Finder answers:

About elements – as far as we know there are a set of basic laws that govern the structure of atoms and the make up of elements. So from that standpoint there should be the same elements with the same properties, wherever you are in the universe.

Until we go out and look, we can’t be totally certain. There will almost certainly be different life forms and different minerals elsewhere in the universe and other quite remarkable things waiting to be discovered. But at this moment in time, the fundamental laws of nature appear to be just that.

Donna asks…

What will scientists do with the newly discovered Element 113?

Google it – it’s interesting.

New Niche Finder answers:

Creating these can help us to understand how atoms work. So while element 113 is unstable and therefore not likely to be useful by its own right, the knowledge we gain from creating it may help us to manufacture better solar cells, fuel cells, nanoparticles, etc. Science builds on itself, and by better understanding fundamentals (in this case atoms) we may find new/better ways of doing things.

Carol asks…

1)What changes occurs in the properties of elements as you move across a period from left to right?

2)What did Moseley discover that influenced the organization of the modern periodic table?

New Niche Finder answers:

You increase valance electrons as you go across.

Chris asks…

1)What changes occurs in the properties of elements as you move across a period from left to right?

2)What did Moseley discover that influenced the organization of the modern periodic table?

New Niche Finder answers:

Left to right increases the mass and atomic number (protons).. And i believe well from the bottom left to the upper right increases the electronegativity.
