Your Questions About How To Discover New Elements

Ken asks…

What is the atomic weight of the element?

A newly discovered element has two isotopes.
One has an atomic weight of 120.9038 amu
with 57.25% abundance. The other has an
atomic weight of 122.8831 amu.
1. 121.75 amu
2. 123.45 amu
3. 121.54 amu
4. 122.15 amu
5. 122.38 amu
6. 121.17 amu

New Niche Finder answers:

121.75 amu

David asks…

Is there a limit to the size of the periodic table of elements?

Given the right conditions could an atom with any number of protons be created or are there some configurations that are physically impossible. i.e. will scientists eventually discover element 119 or 200, or 600?

New Niche Finder answers:

Theoretically there is no limit. However, in reality it seems highly improbable that we will ever go past 150 MAXIMUM (I’ll be surprised if we even get to 125).

What is the atomic weight of the element?

A newly discovered element has two isotopes. One has an atomic weight of 120.9038 amu with 57.25% abundance. The other has an atomic weight of 122.8831 amu. What is the atomic weight of the element?

121.17 amu
123.45 amu
121.54 amu
121.75 amu
122.38 amu
122.15 amu

New Niche Finder answers:

The answer is 121.75 amu

Calculate as follows:

Step 1) Calculate the abundance of the second isotope.

(100% – 57.25%) = 42.75% (abundance of the second isotope)

Step 2) Add the abundance times the atomic weight (in amu) for each isotope to get the atomic weight of the element.

(.4275 * 122.8831) + (.5725 * 120.9038) = 121.75 amu
