Your Questions About How To Discover New Hard Drive

Ken asks…

YLOD Hard Drive Problem?

So I had an 80gb PS3 for five years, and it finally YLOD’d on me about 2 weeks ago. Of course, not knowing much, I decided to just buy a new one and use a hard drive enclosure to get my data back. Once I found out this doesn’t work, I discovered I would need to get the old PS3 working so I could get the data off my hard drive and onto my new PS3.

So, long story short, I fixed my old PS3 myself. meaning, I used a heatgun to reflow the solder in the chips. And voila! No more YLOD. But now, the PS3 is asking me to format my hard drive. It’s the same PS3, with all the same parts from when I bought it. So why does it need to format the hard drive? It’s even the PS3’s ORIGINAL hard drive.

Does anyone know why it’s doing this or how to fix it? Please help! I’m desperate!

New Niche Finder answers:

Your HDD must have been corrupted when your PS3 malfunctioned. Unfortunately there isn’t anything you can do about this except reformat it. Many people think the YLOD is only caused by the solder weakening, and that reflowing it will be a cure-all, but it can involve a series of more complex malfunctions.

Installing a new SATA HD Questions?

I have discovered that after 6 years of use, my HD in my primary PC may be causing some problems that I have been experiencing. Results are here:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111115214912AAvWCBT Full details of my frustrating situation are here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111114162857AAO8Kfg

After gettting some bad results through a Western Digital HD Diagnostic program, I am considering purchasing a new hard drive, in hopes that it will remedy the problems I am having while attempting to use my PC.

My question is, other than being able to make the proper connections between the motherboard/powersupply into the new HD, is there anything else I need to do to correctly install a new HD? Do I need to alter anything in my BIOS?

My BIOS is password protected – so I’m not too keen on the prospect of having to reset the password, which people have been giving me conflicting instructions on how to do..

What exactly do I have to do to incorperate a new HD into my system?

I appreciate your time, and I will not neglect to select a best answer!

New Niche Finder answers:

Resetting the password on your bios is incredibly simple on a desktop, so i don’t see the issue there.
As for installing a drive, also incredibly simple. The issue is installing an OS and saving your old data before the drive is corrupted, which simply is a time/use issue.
Once the new drive is in, i usually disable the old interface to install the os on the new drive, so there is no confusion about formatting or partitioning. Once the os is installed, re-enable the old drive interface and make sure to select the new drive as primary boot, or if the system has a boot menu, you can also use that. Once booted to the new os, copy your data from the old drive to the new drive.

And sata 1 (presently on sata 3) could be that old, but you still need to tell the system which drive to boot.
But you didnt’ say the mobo was that old, just the drive… 😉

Sharon asks…

How do you make a sata drive bootable. i installed one and formatted it but it will not boot up to win 98?

here is the storie. i got a sata hard drive 250 gig. i then discovered that it needed a card to inerface with MY computer. i got a sata card that accepts 2 sata drives. i guess they copie one another. well i put the win 98 disk into the cd drive and it started to format the sata drive. it then went into theinstallation mode and copied the first set of files onto the sata drive. then it rebooted and when it came back on it displayed the win 98 logo and that is all, nothing further and it acts like the computer is locked up, no keboard action works.
i will put xp pro on it as soon as i get win98 to boot up completely. i don’t have the xp boot cd at this time only the upgrade. don’t want to go out and get a new mother board or computer for this if i don’t have to i will just get a different drive. again thanks.

New Niche Finder answers:

I don’t think you can use SATA to install Windows 98, it most likely doesn’t have the support for it. By the way, why are u still using windows 98?

New Niche Finder answers:

The most important upgrade is the graphics card, but you may need to upgrade the power supply as well.
I think a $200 ~ $300 card is all you current system can probably support considering the power requirements of much higher end cards.

Make sure your power supply is AT LEAST 500 Watts or to put it another way, make sure that there is at least 250 watts for everything else before adding into the additional graphics card power requirements.

Depending on the graphics card requirements you will need to see if you will make it. But more than likely you will need to upgrade the power supply too to be sure.

Otherwise you will experience brown-outs and programs locking and freezing when you don’t want them to most in the middle of the game (and you haven’t saved it !!).

Carol asks…

How Can I recover my sound after installing XP with service packs 2 and 3?

It’s the age old story. My sound card worked fine until I installed Windows XP service packs 2 and 3. All of my drivers are updated. All of my drivers are Microsoft signed. The device manager doesn’t show any hardware that needs to be fixed (there are no glowing exclamation marks next to anything). I have “some” sound, but it is garbled and barely understandable. Can anyone help? I have researched this on Google for countless hours without any success. Here’s what I have on my PC.

Ok. Relax.
I had the same prob. But i was making mistake at the time of drivers installation. When we install driver for the first time after formatting and installing windows. At the time of installation of each driver a window appears, “found new hardware” and it asks to download drivers from internet or install manually. So we dont need to touch this window at all. Let it be. It appears and go itself automatically.
If u will play with this window, ur drivers will not get installed correctly.
So, pls take care of this only.
If u have the correct drivers, or cd of it. Then format ur computer and try it again.

*If u r making same mistake as i did. Then and then only this ans will help u.

Confurm, ur drivers r getting installed directly. In some cases, they get just extracted on windows drive in a folder and then u have to install them manually.

Thank u.
