Your Questions About How To Discover New Music

George asks…

Where is the best place to discover new music?

I’ve recently grown a little tired of listening to the same music over and over again and want to find some new bands or artists to listen to.
Some of my favourite bands are The Courteeners, Arctic Monkeys, The Twang, Los Campesinos and Phoenix but I have a very wide range of musical taste.
I just want something good with good lyrics.
Any recommendations welcome.

New Niche Finder answers:

How I find new music:

1.) Recommendations from Last.fm
2.) Looking around random genre charts on RateYourMusic
3.) /mu/ Essential Charts
4.) Music review sites, such as Pitchfork or SputnikMusic
5.) Ask strangers on Last.fm or Yahoo Answers for recs

Try one of those. Don’t use Pandora, it is quite inefficient to a hardcore listener. Same thing for YouTube.

Also, if you enjoy Los Campensinos, try out some Twee Pop artists.

Steven asks…

How do you discover good music?

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems to me that the radio just doesn’t really help anymore when finding good music. I used to love it in high school, but it just seems now it’s not that useful. It seems to me that I actually find more music by musical montages/background used in TV shows and/or movies.

Is anyone else the same way? What other sources do you use?

New Niche Finder answers:

If you go to www.pandora.com
and type in either a song or band you like itll get a lot of songs or bands like that and will play you songs from them. Its like a radio station. But cooler.

How/Where Can I Get My Lyrics I Write Discovered By Executives From Music Companies?

I have been writing songs for awhile now. I have writ en over 150 songs. I post them on Metro-lyrics.com to get recognition and to see how people view my song writing abilities. I need more with my lyrics;

I want to create demo tapes but I can’t right now. Is there anything else I can do with my songs (lyrics)? How/where can I get my lyrics discovered by music company executives?

New Niche Finder answers:

Legit song publishers don’t review lyrics so be careful- there are song sharks out there who prey on lyric writers. Read this: http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Avoid-Song-Sharks-and-Swim-Toward-Songwriting-Success&id=1864757

Basically you need to get a melody written then cut a demo before anyone in the real music industry will give a listen. Getting a collaborator is difficult but might be worth a try (be sure to sign a 50/50 agreement on royalties the song may generate, including downloads). Have you tried writing your own melody and singing it a capella? Most demo services such as http://playitagaindemos.com can put a chord arrangement to an a capella rough.
