Your Questions About How To Discover New Music

Donna asks…

What is the best way to discover music?

What is a great way to discover music that you would love, but have not heard yet? It can be old or new music, I like both. Ive tried stuff like Pandora, but all the songs they play I already know…

New Niche Finder answers:

Try http://www.jango.com. It’s free streaming radio. Like Pandora, you can build a station around an artist or genre you like. Unlike Pandora, it sprinkles in a lot of artists you may not have heard before, including many independent artists. Like all the services it has annoying commercials if you use it free, but it’s great to find new music.

Http://www.earbits.com is another one, it’s ok for finding new music but it isn’t nearly as precise as jango….I think you can just choose genre (nothing more specific). It does still play independent artists and songs you might not have found otherwise.

Electronic Dance Music / Trance

Ken asks…

Could some one tell me more about the music group, Crash Kings?

I have recently discovered the music group Crash Kings, and would like more information about the people and history.

New Niche Finder answers:

LA-based rockers Crash Kings have been tearing up audiences across the nation with their brand of piano-driven, heavy bass rock. Theirs is a guitar driven band without a guitar. They play anthemic Rock on analog instruments. Their lyrics are intimate and honest, sung in a soaring voice.

Crash Kings is the first U.S. Band producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother, Ting Tings) has worked with in seven years. The band is composed of the following: Tony – vocals, pianos; Jason – drumset; and Mike – bass.

Here is a link to the group’s Myspace account: http://www.myspace.com/crashkings

Daniel asks…

What websites are good for finding new music?

I posted a question a few days ago asking people to recommend new artists they had discovered, citing that one of the main reasons for this was I didn’t always find websites too useful at giving original recommendations. For example, last.fm doesn’t group similar artists very accurately. Does anyone know of any websites which are less well known and probably therefore underused, which have helped you discover good new music in the past? Once again, thanks

New Niche Finder answers:

I’ve never had problems with finding similar artists on Last.fm. Just the radio sucks. And stay away from blogs like Pitchfork or Stereogum. They’re almost as bad as Rolling Stone these days.

Susan asks…

Where can I find Artists like Andain ?

I recently discovered Andains music and I Love it ! Her two songs “Beautiful things” and ” you once told me” are really nice to listen to. Does anyone know of any other female artists similar to her ? Thanks !

New Niche Finder answers:

Andain is a duo, Josh Gabriel and Mavie Marcos. They are considered to be in the genre Electronica or more precise Trance (“Beautiful Things” and “Summer Calling” belong definitely to trance music).

Similar artists, often with changing singers, are
Oceanlab (feat. Justine Suissa), songs: Satellite, Sirens of the Sea, On a good Day
Armin van Buuren (many different singers), songs: Shivers, Unforgivable, Burned with Desire

Other similar songs:
Aurora feat. Naimee Coleman – Sleeping Satellite
Ernesto vs Bastian – Dark Side Of The Moon
Rachael Starr – Till There Was You
Ridgewalkers feat. El – Find
Empyreal Sun feat. Elles de Graaf – From Dark to Light
Headstrong feat. Tiff Lacey – Close your Eyes
Filo & Peri feat. Fisher – Closer Now (Whiteroom Mix)
Matt Darey feat. Marcella Woods – Beautiful
Mads Arp feat. Julie Harrington – Slow it Down (Mathilda Mix)
Miss Shiva – Dreams
Laura Turner – Soul Deep
Chicane feat. Maire Brennan of Clannad – Saltwater
Ozone aka. Airbase – Rock (Jupiter Six Vocal Mix)

Airbase is one of the best known trance artists with tons of non vocal melodic tunes (e.g. Spin, Genie, Back, Lucid).
