Your Questions About How To Discover New Music

Betty asks…

Best ways to discover new music genres/ artists/ bands??!?

I have 200 artists on my iPod, all of which are very similar regarding genre.
I mainly only listen to 80s hair metal, folk metal, and other subgenres of metal (That DO NOT include harsh vocals, growls, etc, like death or black metal.)
I also listen to funk, but I want to broaden my musical horizon, perse, and have no idea how or where to start.
I usually use Last.Fm, but that just shows me similar artists to the ones I already enjoy.
I want a lot more variety on my iPhone.

The only artists I have that aren’t my usual preferred genres are LMFAO, The Academy Is, MSI, Fall Out Boy, The Used.
What’s a good website or other method to do this??
Thanks!
Kay, like I already said; I don’t want a method that just shows similar artists. I want to discover new music ENTIRELY different from my own.

I don’t know of any specific websites that will give you recommendations for different types of music but these methods might work for you:

>You can ask for music recommendations on Yahoo Answers. Just say you are looking for new music and list the genres you don’t want recommended. You might not always get the best results, but every now and then it might work.

>If you listen to music on YouTube, look at the related videos and click on anything that looks interesting. Sometimes the band is similar to the one you were listening to, but sometimes you get something different.

>Go to record companies’ websites and look at the artists on their sites. Click on any band that catches your attention and listen to a song or two. If you need a place to start, check out Hopeless Records and Fearless Records.

I hope this helps and good luck!

It’s the best, it will find music based on what you like already and it’s free!

Chris asks…

What have you got for someone who’s looking to discover some new music?

I’m sure everyone has at least one band in their library that’s so extremely good, yet nobody knows them (or at least that’s how you feel). I’m curious to hear what those bands are, in order to discover some new music myself. So here’s what you do:

Post the artist’s name, followed by what genre of music they play. If you can provide a youtube link, it’s even better. If you don’t know the artist someone else has posted, give it a thumbs up. If you do know the artist, give it a thumbs down. Let’s see how this works out. =)

Mark asks…

How can I find a way to discover new bands that are of or like the genre I like?

I’ve tried going to amazon.com and checking the similar sold cds to what bands I like… but I would like a better way to find new music.

New Niche Finder answers:

Last.fm is good site as stated above.
But if you set up for pandora.com which is a radio station you can create on your own.. The songs played on that station are matches to that band you chose.

I’m not sure if this makes sense, but i’ll try to break it down.
Since its your OWN station created you start off by putting in a band you enjoy.

The station will play the band chosen, as well as similar matches to their genre.

If you don’t like it, you can put thumbs down and that will skip the song and will never play it again.

(:

purevolume.com works well too.

How can I start a music club at my school?

I know how to ask and everything. Because music is such a broad topic, how can I organize everything? I also want people to discover new music too, not just tell others what they like. Also, I want to have a kind of goal for the club at the end of the year, like a project or something, but I don’t know how and what. Any ideas would be appreciated!!

You should get everyone who wants to sign up, sign their name on a paper and appeal it to a teacher who could sponsor you then write up an appeal and ask your principal for approval
