Your Questions About How To Discover New Music

Linda asks…

Please help me discover new music! (Techno pro’s needed)?

PLEASE take the time to listen to the songs (you don’t have to all the way through)
I’ve been looking for music like the following:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3zz5SFGbuo Deadmau5 – Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Remix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dbE4v-u0mY Rameses B – Skyrim In The Knee

I’m more into Synth and Electronic rather than dubstep, but I do enjoy dubstep. I don’t like Skrillex, at all. I think he’s so bad and it bothers me how unmelodic his music is. I really like the second song because, I just, don’t know. The “dub” in it isn’t like Skrillex, it’s possible to follow and so good. When it comes to Deadmau5, he’s too “house”-ish. I also like these songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jECSBjZwo7w No known title (according to a comment it’s a remix of New Born by Muse)

I also like: Bassnecter: Lights, Bassnecter: Timesctrech

Please help me find anything new!

Electro-house is something you might have heard of.

Here are a few (There might be a layer of dubstep in there)

Geometry – Lou (1:30 is when melody breaks in)

Wiz Khalifa – No sleep (DJ Kue remix) (In case you like rap, electro’d version)

Kelis – Scream (Russ Chimes remix)

Wolfgang Gartner – The American Epic (PrototypeRaptor Bootleg) (Listen to 3:00 and up if you really like melody)

Cool Project – Gravity (Funkk sound)

Here’s some dubstep that might be to your liking

Coyote Kisses – Acid Wolfpack

xKore – Need you (Centra remix)

Klaypex – Lights

Cassius – I Love You So (Tambour Battant Remix) [Tim Ismag Edit]

John asks…

How do you usually discover new music?

These days I’m only able to make it out to a couple live shows a month and that used to me how I discovered so many great travelling and local artists. These days since I work and other things consume the rest of my time (and Coachella only happens once a year), the only time I get to sample new music is through recommendations by friends, Pop Candy, Stereogum, Pitchfork, and occasionally Pandora.

Any suggestions?
Indeed, Last.fm’s great! I’ve got an account on there, but I don’t pay much attention to it. I typically use it for the charts it provides for my listening.

Whenever it gives me a recommendation, it’s seldom ever anything I haven’t already heard.

It is scary when I check out my “neighbours,” some people’s listening habits are eerily similar to mine.

Also, to answer your question about Sonic Youth, which I can’t find, I’d really recomment Daydream Nation which is SY’s, imo, one of the peaks of SY’s creativity. Dirty and Bad Moon Rising also rank way up there.

I love how commercials use new songs. Like Old Navy, “Last Thing on Your Mind” or iTunes, “1, 2,3,4,” “Shut up and let me go” “Viva la Vida” i like to go on youtube to listen to the songs, and you can see other songs by the artist, i love thats not my name. And somethimes my freinds tell me. And i read magazines. And american idol has guests [leona lewis] [keep bleeding love]

Helen asks…

In what way do you discover new music that you like?

Music must be disseminated in some way, either through radio, TV, computers, live performances, clubs, etc. It would also be interested to know how you determine if that music is “cool.”

New Niche Finder answers:

Music touches the soul. Got me moving my head or my feet. We are not just talking the beat. Lyrical content is key too.

Short survey: How do you discover new music?

I have a survey that won’t take more than ONE MINUTE to complete.
I’m trying to figure out how people come across new artists/music in this day and age.

TAKE the survey on here: https://uscannenberg.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_1XhBV3jhPziLp40

It’s safe to take and completely anonymous.

Looking forward to getting your feedback!!

Thanks in advance!
Feel free to elaborate on your answers here.
**please don’t forget to complete the survey I included, I’m trying to put together some stats on the most common way**

All feedback is appreciated and taken into consideration :)

Personally, I find out about new music through word-of-mouth. I have friends send me what they’re listening to and I share what I’m listening to — from there, people give me recommendations on what they think I’d like and vice-versa.

Paul asks…

How can I discover new music?

If I listen to Nirvana, the Pixies, the Strokes, Portishead, M.I.A., Florence and the Machine, a little Radiohead, and a little Bassnectar, what other bands and genres should I get into? I love heavy bass and great lyrics. I tried to use Pandora but it played too much techo/club kind of stuff. The genres I like are dubstep, trip-hop, witch house, alternative… and I don’t know the names of the rest of the genres hehe. But yeah, I’ve been listening to a lot of chill-out music lately and would like something faster but not necessarily upbeat. Any suggestions are appreciated!

New Niche Finder answers:

Fantastic bands there I’d say. I have lost interest in using Pandora, I now just use last.fm. I prefer it to Pandora.
It sorta sounds like you’d like bands like, Massive Attack, Lamb, Björk, Cake, and Arctic Monkeys.
