Your Questions About How To Discover New Species

Susan asks…

when the theory of evolution was discovered, why didn’t people start lumping billions of dollars of investment?

into figuring out the best way to ensure that human beings were not evolving in such a way that we would end up causing our own self-destructive downfall?

Why, instead, have we chosen to IGNORE the possibility that evolution can be as much a threat to us as a species as it is a blessing?
Hitler also claimed to be a christian.

New Niche Finder answers:

Well…. Hitler was interested in guiding evolution – so that everybody would be tall and blond. Didn’t get them very far though.

How to work with cataloging species, research?

I’m still studying, but when I work, I’d like to do research both in a lab and outdoors. I’d like to be able to catalog new species.
What are the job opportunities? Or at least what do you have to do to be recognized if you catalog a new species?

New Niche Finder answers:

When a new species is discovered, it is the person who discovers it who describes the species, names it and publishes details. They should then provide specimens which are lodged with a museum.

If this is your field of interest then you need to specialise in taxonomy and more than that probably, taxonomy in a particular group such as insects, so that you can identify every structure and recognise a new species if you find one.

Daniel asks…

Why is the definition of species as”successfully interbreeding organisms”not saftisfactory for microorganisms?

Why is the definition of species as “successfully interbreeding organisms” not satisfactory for most microorganisms?

New Niche Finder answers:

Successful interbreeding does not apply to bacteria because they are capable of interbreeding between species of another kind, via conjugation, transduction, transmission of plasmids (asexual reproduction). This is why new strains of bacteria are being discovered constantly, bacteria evolve to adapt to their environment by combining plasmids of the most resistant and highly adaptable traits. This is also why bacteira will eventually be resistant to antibiotics
see MRSA (methycillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococcus)

How can Noah fit the 10 billion species of animals into his ark?

thats got to be a big ark but it doesnt make sense. How can he do that when all the animals are seperated. America wasnt even discovered yet and there were different species of animals in america. Does this mean its fake?

New Niche Finder answers:

Beats me. Just imagine all those species crammed together, 8,000+ species of reptiles, 4,000+ species of mammals, 10,000+ species of birds (except perhaps albatross, which could have kept alive in a flood without an ark), 4,000+ species of amphibians and 5-30 million species of terrestrial invertebrates. A sight to behold, for sure! To fit everyone on the ark they would have had to balance on top of each other, hundreds of feet into the air. But what about all of the species of parasites? Since so many species have species-specific parasites, they must have all been carried in the relatively few hosts. Imagine that poor Noah, carrying around hundreds of species of parasitic worms, ticks, flukes, not to mention all of the parasitical protozoan–some of which are fatal, including the brain devouring amoeba, Naegleria fowleri.
