The Book of Genesis was written thousands of years ago by the ancient Hebrews. Because technology at the time was so limited, it’s not surprising that a literal interpretation doesn’t fully match up with what we see in the real world. Ditto for some of the scientific works of people like Aristotle.

Regardless, most Christians I know aren’t Biblical fundamentalists, and in fact argue that to treat the Bible as a literal history book is to miss the point.

Richard asks…

the “great flood” and the Ark?

last night while watching Evan Almighty a few questions popped into my head. How much rain would have had to fall in order to flood the entire world? If it rains an inch per minute, 60 inches an hour, 1440 inches a day, thats 57,600 inches in 40 days….divided by 12 to put inches into feet……brings up 4,800 feet of water….that would not be enough to cover the entire world???
Another question…what happened to the polar bears, penguins, and other extremely cold climate living animals….did they make their way to the Ark..and if so, how did they survive the warmer temperatures?
One last thing that came to mind…if each animal went into the arc 2 by 2…..how is it that we are still discovering new species?
So, if the flood was “local” how could God have killed off all of the unritchious with the flood…as there were surely heathens in other areas? I understan that the Bible is full of parables….but many feel it really happened……as a kid I believed it….but as I have gained an education, I tend to examine things more and accept less on pure faith…..and I just do not see how that much water could just appear..and then vanish.
If it came from under…then there would be a large void from where it was….or there would have to be noticible caverns/paths that it took in coming up and receeding..right? I do not believe the mountains just popped up after the alleged flood…that much tectonic activity would have been noted in every corner of the world…yet no info points to this that I have seen

Really just wanted to see if my thought were in line with that of others…..and to bring this up at the watercooler here at work….would not be in my best interest

The Great Flood was more local in Southern Mesopotamia rather than the whole world. The Biblical use of world usually only means the world that they knew of. I’m sure nobody ever heard of the Americas back then, nor have they heard of Polar Bears way up North. They would have to travel up to Russia or the neighboring northern countries to bring two Polar Bears down to Mesopotamia, which is highly unlikely. These Polar Bears are not adaptable to warmer climates, as we can see them dying off now where the ice shelves are melting in the Arctic North. Then there are the Canada Lynx, a lot of other animals had to be taken down from up North, which would take a lot of cages and travelling, etc… I don’t even think they could possibly put elephants and rhinos from Africa to hold inside the Ark, risking a breakage and flooding the Ark itself.

Jenny asks…

Is God, the creator of SIN?? Help?

Hot. Cold.
The two words above, a fact of which we would all agree, are two poles of a certain element that our body experiences.
Hot is that which comprises Heat which is felt by one of our sensory perceptors.
Cold is the opposite of Heat that which is felt by one of our sensory perceptors.

Now, consider this. Without the presence of HOT, we would not have COLD. The experience of something being HOT gives us a basis for calling it’s opposite as COLD. Without Hot, we would not have Cold, and vice versa. They are two opposite poles of an experience.

Similar principles apply for GOOD and EVIL. Yes, I acknowledge them to be of religious terms. Without EVIL, how would we ever know that there was something called GOOD?
Each of these poles of ‘conduct’ would not EXIST nor function without it’s opposite. They are both required and important for each of them to exist.

That said, let us take a look at nature. Nature, a proof of God’s glorious creation. It took him FIVE WHOLE days for him to create this wonderful world we live in today. Flora and Fauna of the LANDS, the SKIES and the WATERS were created by God. We all know how glorious it all is.
Bummer, we still have no complete knowledge of his creations! We’re always discovering new species here and there.

Now, take a closer look at Nature. To be precise, look at a bird – A sparrow.
A sparrow ready to give birth lays her Eggs in a different bird’s nest. It often pushes away to the ground, the eggs that were laid by another. It lays it’s own eggs on the pre-made nest and boom, goes away. The eggs laid by the sparrow are then raised and cared for by the fooled bird which had made the nest for itself.
There are many other birds that do this.

Humanely speaking, and applying human moral policies, this bird has STOLEN, MURDERED and FOOLED – Evil. Thats 40 years of imprisonment in prison.

Look at another creation. Look at the carnivores – they hunt, murder and eat from the flesh of other animals. And when hungry, are known to kill humans for food- Evil.
Now look at another creation. The deer. Such a gentle creature. Magnificent. Humble. It eats plants and grass for it’s survival and has not been known to be anything short of being a GOOD animal.

We as observers can place the term GOOD and EVIL to the creations of God.
We as observers can place the term GOOD and EVIL to men who do certain deeds.
We as observers can then, wonder…..Why God created such deadly, dangerous and immoral animals(some animals have kids with their own mothers) AND ALSO created the glorious, gentle and lovable creatures.

Then we wonder…………did God create both GOOD and EVIL? He certainly created the animal kingdom that way and also created Humans who possessed the power to do BOTH GOOD and EVIL. (Eating from the tree of Good and Evil) (Giving birth to kids from their own mothers and fathers – written of in the bible)

So my question, based on all the examples I placed here is…….Isn’t God, the creator of Sin? I mean, he THREW lucifer down to earth all the while KNOWING that there were people.down there.

ANOTHER QUESTION :
Lucifer (Satan, The Devil) was an angel before, right? Well how come angels can change their mind too? If an angel wants to turn bad…………he can??
Does the freedom of choice exist in the Kingdom of Heaven too?

I was born in a strong christian family. Was taught about Sin. There came a point in life where I asked these questions…….no one answered. They just made up stories and assumptions and told me to believe it. They told me animals got evil too because of Us.
I just can’t believe it.
I believe, through proof that I just told you about. That God created the Opposite of himself and his holiness on earth so we might choose from both Holy and Unholy – practitioners of both are granted equal love.
Practitioners of Good – granted happiness, empowerment, joy and glory.
Practitioners of Evil – granted forgiveness and love through Jesus.

Anybody throw some light? Anybody who can prove my theory wrong? Anybody tell me if I am right? Anybody tell me if I am wrong?

Call me a sinner. Call me a blasphemer. Call me an idiot who deserves to be punished.
But people………in the words of Jesus, may those without Sin, throw stones at me first.

I am a believer of God, nature is proof for my faith.
But I do not believe in Sin.

Have a good day folks.

Sin is described in the Bible as transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4) and rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7; Joshua 1:18). Sin had its beginning with Lucifer, probably the most beautiful and powerful of the angels. Not content with his position, he desired to be higher than God, and that was his downfall, the beginning of sin (Isaiah 14:12-15). Renamed Satan, he brought sin to the human race in the Garden of Eden, where he tempted Adam and Eve with the same enticement, “you shall be like God.” Genesis 3 describes Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God and against His command. Since that time, sin has been passed down through all the generations of mankind and we, Adam’s descendants, have inherited sin from him. Romans 5:12 tells us that through Adam sin entered the world, and so death was passed on to all men because “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Through Adam, the inherent inclination to sin entered the human race, and human beings became sinners by nature. When Adam sinned, his inner nature was transformed by his sin of rebellion, bringing to him spiritual death and depravity which would be passed on to all who came after him. We are sinners not because we sin; rather, we sin because we are sinners. This passed-on depravity is known as inherited sin. Just as we inherit physical characteristics from our parents, we inherit our sinful natures from Adam. King David lamented this condition of fallen human nature in Psalm 51:5: “Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”

Another type of sin is known as imputed sin. Used in both financial and legal settings, the Greek word translated “imputed” means “to take something that belongs to someone and credit it to another’s account.” Before the Law of Moses was given, sin was not imputed to man, although men were still sinners because of inherited sin. After the Law was given, sins committed in violation of the Law were imputed (accounted) to them (Romans 5:13). Even before transgressions of the law were imputed to men, the ultimate penalty for sin (death) continued to reign (Romans 5:14). All humans, from Adam to Moses, were subject to death, not because of their sinful acts against the Mosaic Law (which they did not have), but because of their own inherited sinful nature. After Moses, humans were subject to death both because of inherited sin from Adam and imputed sin from violating the laws of God.

I’m an Atheist. And I don’t believe anything.

But I know a lot of people who do believe. And they are struggling with the same fact as you. What is good and what is bad? The simple answer to their question is: Satan made all evil. But I think if you combine religion with common sense you will see that maybe ‘God’ created everything, inclusive what we call “evil”.

Fact is we all can’t say what ‘God’ meant when he created the world. We can’t ask him, yet…

In my opinion you shouldn’t worry too much. If ‘God’ created us he also created doubt and our evil side. And he will still love you, no matter what. Just live your life. Because really: God made us, our feelings and our sense of humor. And if really did. He should have those feelings and sense of humor too.

William asks…

How can I achieve my goal to live an adventurous, fulfilling life?

I’ve always known what I want to do with my life. When I was younger, I would look at the pictures in National Geographic magazines and imagine what it was like there. I’d pretend I was an adventurer in the rain forest, discovering new species of animals, or an explorer of the arctic tundra. I want to know how to become my dream, how to escape the boring suburban life that I am doomed to live.

I’m a freshman in high school, and I come from a middle class family with four other kids. I’ve been into photography for about three years, and I want to become an adventurer. I want to travel the world and experience and photograph different cultures and far away places as a career.
What steps should I take now to achieve my goals in later life?

The best way to get hit by a train, is to go where they are and stand in the middle of the tracks…

Take your camera and explore your own city. There MUST be places where you would never go… Go there..! Take pics. Learn to handle your self in uncomfortable areas and situations, but keep taking pics of things. Make a personal documentary,

After you do this a few time and now have hopefully a good # of human interest images, see if a local art center or gallery will let you hang, or find local places that will.

Next, your State. It MUST have areas too of major curiousness and places of adventure. Explore them. Look close to get your adventures, at first. Learn to handle yourself, take images in harsh environments and deal with people. Especially people. Here they speak English, for the most part.. And you both can understand one another. Wait till you have a crowd around you saying things you don’t understand, and their faces don’t look none too happy..and your 4,000 miles from home..!

Hardly anyone is but a few hours from yet another State or large city. Start to photographically explore these areas too, all the time honing your skills as a outdoor photographer and adding photos to your portfolio. Keep pressing galleries in your area to hang your work so others can see what your doing. Get or make your own web page documenting your street photography and local travels. Keep a on line blog and notes to be read by others. Add some of these images.

If you can become an accomplished photographer, your work will speak volumes over and above a pig skin on your wall. However, nothing beats a education either, except experience. Bill Gates was a 8th grade drop out if I remember right. Steve Jobs didn’t get too far in school either..

What you can do, and make of your self, IS entirely up to you. There are thousands of people with degrees, flipping burgers. I have a friend back in Michigan with 2 Ph D’s.. He assembles cars on a assembly line because no one wants to hire him cause he is way over qualified for virtually anything. Too much schooling is like a double edge blade. It can cut both ways.

I am self taught in photography. I read book and went out and did it. Read more books and went out and did some more. This started in the mid 60’s. Today I have a house on some desert land west of Tucson bought 10 years ago, but paid off 2 years ago. Paid cash for a new Harley Christmas of 04 and put a few grand down on a used 2nd one in my wifes name so she could build some credit, but paid cash for a Jeep Cherokee. And ya know what..? I’m lazy.. I don’t like to work..

Remember, if you say you can’t do it – your right..!

You come to a fork in the road.. Take it..! You don’t know where your going anyway, so it don’t matter, right..?

Live with your camera. Take it EVERY WHERE.. Take pics, every where. Go and step in the way of “traffic” to get your pics. Push your self and your equipment and see where the weakness are. Fix them (correct them) and push again..

If some lazy ol’ fart like myself can do it, you can too…!

Bob – Tucson
