Your Questions About How To Discover New Species

Daniel asks…

Angel Fish-What should I do if my angel fish eggs do hatch?

Today I discovered eggs and one of the angel fish happen to be guarding them. My tank has different fish (3 guppies, a bala shark, neon tetras, 2 goldfish, and a bit more) plus 3 angel fish. The guarding angel fish is doing okay and the angel fish never fight any fish in the tank. Anyways the question is what do I do if the eggs hatch? They are mostly unfertilized eggs, but I pobably can’t see some of the fertilized eggs. I do see some though, what do I do? The eggs are already in the tank full of fish.

New Niche Finder answers:

As soon as they hatch watch and wait and watch your angels they will defend the eggs but watch for aggression I have two and they can get very nippy around breeding time.I recommend you read this it can be very helpful http://fins.actwin.com/fish/species/angelfish.html

again watch the aggression and I hope everything goes well and if it does and you find yourself in a bind with lots and lots, your local pet store (mostly privately owned) may take the little ones off of your hands

How did people find out that weed makes you high?

There are 400,000 species of plants today which makes it hard for me to believe that it was a simple case of trial and error.

Moreover, weed gets you high in very specific ways, you can’t just set it on fire and sniff it and get high. So did they go through all of that process of rolling and lighting to hundreds of thousands of different plants?

Did our ancestors really have nothing better to do?

“Evidence of the inhalation of cannabis smoke can be found in the 3rd millennium BCE, as indicated by charred cannabis seeds found in a ritual brazier at an ancient burial site in present day Romania.”

“Hemp seeds discovered by archaeologists at Pazyryk suggest early ceremonial practices like eating by the Scythians occurred during the 5th to 2nd century BCE”

It wouldn’t surprise me if it started with some cooking going wrong. Yes it takes a lot of work to purposely bake something that can get you high if you aint using resin, but how much effort does it take to get something wrong and burn your cakes?

@Zetheron, you can’t get high on cannabis by making an infusion. You have to use something like alcohol to make a tincture.

@Jade, that one I think came about from domesticating cows. And not that big a jump from “Women produce milk for children and it’s good food” to “Baby cows need milk too, maybe that’s good food,” especially when caring for the animals and raising children was part of daily life for all.

How to care for baby orphaned birds?

My daughter just discovered 3 baby birds – 2 have their eyes open, 1 doesn’t. Not sure what type. Probably only recently hatched/ about a day old, if I had to guess. They have little strength altho’ the feathers are all dry and all 3 are squirming about. We couldn’t see the mum so we’ve brought them back and are trying to keep them warm. What to do? I don’t think their beaks have opened yet. When do they open? Any (humanitarian) suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.

New Niche Finder answers:

Well try as hard as you can to find out what kind of bird it is, like through use of the internet, because that makes a difference. But basically
-put them in a shoebox filled with warm bedding (like rabbit bedding ) or you can bundle up tissues and put in some old fabric like flannel
– you can buy baby bird formula at the pet store which will have feeding instructions
– on doves and pigeon baby birds (this is why its important to know species) there is a muscle pouch on their chest called a “crop” you feed them until you feel the crop fill up (it kind of inflates) if the crop feels full do not feed
– other baby birds need a different amount of food this website can help
http://www.2ndchance.info/insecteater.htm
– keep the babies warm, you might need a very low watt heat lamp or hot water bottle
– when they are fledglings you will have to take them out more and teach them how to fly
– the website should say how many times a day to feed
suerte!
If it gets to difficult give them to a nature center or wildlife rehabilitation center

William asks…

What techniques could you apply to determine the relationship between these organisms?

– You have discovered the fossil remains of three organisms. One is a mammalian, one is reptilian, and the third has both mammalian and reptilian features. –

New Niche Finder answers:

This question should probably be asked in the biology section. But anyways:

Just observing the organisms, you can deduce that the organism with both mammalian and reptilian features is the ancestor of the other two. It would not be that the mammalian and reptilian organisms mated to produce the third organism because different species are often unable to produce offspring together (One reason is because they have different mating calls, ways of attracting a mate, etc so they cannot understand one another’s actions).

What will happen if water is an alternative to fuel?

Scientist had discovered that water can be used as an alternative to fuel. 70% water + 30% fuel and its carbon chains must not break down. If this is really happening, should human race for water, start boundring their area and apply for title deed, just like land.

New Niche Finder answers:

It isn’t possible but if it were we would be in the same situation. You cannot make water…it’s not a renewable resource. We would be in a worse situation than we are now as we would use up this resource and ultimately kill all living species including humans off the face of the earth as we need water to survive.
