Your Questions About How To Find A New Career

William asks…

How are late career starters viewed by Europeans ?

How are late career starters viewed by Europeans ?

Math, IT, and Engineering in particular.

New Niche Finder answers:

I think it’s normal for people to start a little later in Europe. Then again, it depends how many years “late” you mean.

Take Germans, for instance. First of all, High school lasts an extra year. Second, a lot of people take a year off for travel. And lastly, men in Germany have to do a year in the military or a year of community service before they go to university. Plus it’s very common to hear about people in their mid twenties who are still waiting to even get a spot at a university to study the subject they want to study.

I can’t speak for the rest of Europe, but in Germany it isn’t unheard of that someone doesn’t start their career until they’re in their 30’s.

Sandy asks…

What do you wish you’d known about your career when you were 23?

Any career advice in particular you’d like to pass along to a wavering youth?

New Niche Finder answers:

I am 35 and still trying to figure it out. But I can give you some great advice. I have been a business owner, car salesman, Manager, Factory worker, Policeman, Art Dealer, Home builder, Developer,Heavy Mach Operator. And if I could go back to age 23. I would simply pick what I thought would be the best career in the world and go after it with all my heart and mind. Every great career is held by someone who worked there ass off to get where they are. Take a few months and right down all the best careers you can think of. Then figure out what it takes to get there. There is a lot of good people out there that will help you. Just ask them. Take my advice and save yourself a lot of mistakes and lost time. If you want to be a movie star than start acting. Join plays, make your self whatever it is you really want. Trust me. Pick one thing and stick with it. Also, I have been very rich and I have been very broke. And being rich is not what it’s cracked up to be. Doing what you love everyday is the best life you can have. Hope this helps!

What career requires a philosophy degree?

If i ever were to get a degree in philosophy, what career could I take up. Also, if the career is just being a philosopher, what do philosophers do exactly? Do they just write books and teach classes. Pardon me for my ignorance.

New Niche Finder answers:

The only career that *requires* a philosophy degree is being a philosophy teacher/professor.

The main job of a philosopher is to think, about existing and new ideas, and how they impact people, other ideas, and the world.

They really mostly do write books and teach classes, and also give talks (which isn’t that different from teaching classes).
