Your Questions About How To Find A New Doctor

Sandra asks…

How can I find a good chronic pain Doctor who will keep prescribing me my medicines that I am on.?

Hi, How can I find a good chronic pain Doctor who will keep prescribing me my medicines that I am on. My doctor is leaving after 8 years and I am on a “good, working medication schedule” after many years of trying other things. We have found what works but now I need to find a new doctor who will prescribe me the same medications (narcotics & anxiety medications) within 30 days. I didnt get much notice so I need to move quick. I hate to go and see “20” (so to say) doctors for them to tell me that they cant prescribe them to me.
I live in Wisconsin & most doctors seem to be scared to prescribe narcotics even though I have been on them for years.
Shopping for a new doctor seems impossible in less then 30 days. How do I find a good one who will help me and keep me on the regimine that I have been on for 6 years?
Thank you.

I know I can go to a pain clinic for my pain but for my anxiety the way I am understanding it, I would have to find another doctor. I am used to just one. Thanks

Pain management physicians are used to prescribing anxiolytics as a part of the complex of pain syndomes. If you are on chronic pain medications, then the proper place for you is a pain medicine specialist. Your current doctor should have made a referral, and to not properly hand off his patients is poor practice.

Have your records transferred, showing good control on the current regimen, to a pain specialist. They will continue the meds. As they specialize in pain control they may have some new ideas, but it up to you to discuss these and agree or not agree to try new things.

Good luck with your pain issue

If you look at the American Academy of Pain Management website they will have doctors available in your area.

Susan asks…

Should I find a new doctor (long read)?

I have had nothing but bad experiences with my OB.

I have a high risk pregnancy and none of the doctors in my city would see me, so I had to find a doctor in the next city. It takes me an hour to get there, so i usually have to take a day off from work for each visit. I’ve had about 4 visits so far and I have to say I HATE my OB’s office. My first visit was okay, but I guess the doctor was having a bad day b/c she was not courteous at all. She was actually pretty rude. During my exam she yelled (yes, yelled) at me b/c I had my knees slightly bent…but I guess she didn’t realized that she told me to bend my knees. The second visit I was led to the back to give a urine sample. After I finished, I came out to find the nurse gone. I walked around for 10 minutes straight looking for her…I passed other nurses and asked them for help, they all ignored me, like I wasn’t there. I finally found the nurse and we set at her desk to do the normal question routine…right in the middle, she left and i was there to sit for another 10 minutes alone…I had to go to the restroom…I passed her, she was with another nurse talking about her son’s baseball game. The doctor was a little nicer this time. My 3rd appointment went okay until the end when i was checking out, I told the young lady that I did not want to be screen for down syndrome (which is MY choice)…..she tried to guilt me into getting the screening done. Once she realized that I would not be moved, her attitude changed towards me drastically. She was not the nice, bubbly teeny bopper she was before. I left feeling horrible, which I don’t think i should have. I had very good reasons for not wanting the screening done(b/c I was getting it done in 2 weeks by another doctor), but I felt i owed no one excuses, it my choice. My last visit I took my husband with me, i told him that the wait wouldn’t be long, i usually get in and out..blah blah…..well they made me look like a liar. I showed up 15 minutes early for my appointment and it took me an hour to get to the back..I was not happy. Now they are trying to tell me that i owe them 1500 dollars for my deductible……but my deductible has been FULLY met. I have brought them letters from the insurance company, the insurance company has offered to call them (they didn’t answer), and I have even showed them online where i have met my deductible fully…but nope, they claim i owe them 1500 bucks! After my 1500 dollars have been met, my visits are covered 100% by my insurance company…….but the office isn’t trying to heat any of that…they claim that i owe them 1500 bucks. I am getting so angry. I wanna find a new doctors office, but i’m 18 weeks 5 days pregnant and i don’t know if it’s too late. I don’t know how that would work, not to mention trying to find a doctor who will treat me. But I don’t have another 1500 bucks to dish out to my current OB. What should I do? Am I overreacting?

Please no mean or sarcastic advice….you really don’t wanna go there right now.

You have the right to be treated with respect! If you get that stressed out by going to this particular doctor you need to find another one, imagine what it would be like trying to deliver with her. I don’t think they can make you pay since you have proof and the insurance company is on your side. I’m not anywhere close to being an expert but I feel you and your baby would feel a whole lot better finding someone else. Maybe you could talk to the local OB who doesn’t want your high risk case and they may be able to recommend a couple doctors who would be comfortable taking you as a patient.
GOOD LUCK to you and hope the rest of your pregnancy is more pleasent.

how do i find a new pain doctor?

i am moving to lafayette, louisiana and leaving my doctor of 2 years or so. i have been taking pain medications regularly since and have found a decent working schedule. how do i find a new doctor in a new state, who can keep up my monthly regiment? –also, i’m leaving within the next few weeks.

New Niche Finder answers:

Consult your present doctor if he belongs to any pain management societies he can probably refer you to the new doctor.don’t forget the new doctor will need all your records, and your present doctor can put a nice package together for you as well . If it’s too late for that call the doctor’s review board( site )and pick one, that’s been rated by others it’s online for many states.also ask your doctor for an extra month of medicine.they are allowed what’s called vacation meds.
