Your Questions About New Niches

Lizzie asks…

How do you come up with a lucrative business idea?

Admittedly I’ve no experience in business at all, but the idea of having your own business – being your own boss – sounds an appealing one. How do you come up with a decent idea, though? Is it all about looking for a niche market or doing something established already? Are there any surefire prospects or is it all hit and miss? Anything worth trying?

New Niche Finder answers:

There is no such thing as a surefire hit – think of the restaurants in your area…why are some still around after years but others that may be just as good go out of business in a few months.

The goal would be to identify a market that has space for a company (whether an established sector or product or a niche), determine what needs to be done to satisfy that segment, make sure the segment is big enough for you to survive/thrive, and then establish your company.

For example, if you were to live in a middle or upper-middle class area and you noticed that lawns tended to get a bit long between mowing, that might indicate that the folks living in those homes work a lot and don’t have time for proper lawn maintenance (but probably have the money). Since they are scraggly/long, there also may not be a lawn maintenance service in the area, even though lawn maintenance industry is well established (or existing lawn maintenance companies are overworked).

Basically, take stock of your abilities or a talent/skill you can acquire that interests you, look around to see if there are companies doing it in your area (and if so, are they doing it well), and then figure out if there is a market (you wouldn’t want to repair motorcycles if everyone drives cars).

As someone once said, Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

Susan asks…

Why are Oysters important to the Chesapeake Bay?

What is their niche in this ecosystem?
And what is suspension feeding?

I need this for an essay and I have already done some research but some more answers are always nice.

New Niche Finder answers:

I don’t know so much about oysters and their niche in the Chesapeake, but I do know a little about scallops. Scallops feed on things that are suspended in the water, filtering them out of the water column. This causes the turbidity of the water to become reduced (the water becomes clearer) which allows things like eel grass beds to flourish. These beds help to reduce erosion – which is great for people living along the bay – and also provide a haven for an untold number of marine species. Some of the species can be fished. I hope this helps!!

Laura asks…

What to do when you have no personal identity?

When you’re able to adapt & conform to any setting & ”act” like any other people, but you yourself don’t know who you actually are because you’ve never identified with anyone, not even an idol, what do you do? How would you figure out where to belong when you keep changing & evolving all the time?
Would you pick a random place & stick to it or would you remain a jack of all trades? Either way, you’re a dishonest hypocrite for adapting to what you don’t know if you agree with. And if you adapt to multiple niches you’ll have to contradict yourself.

New Niche Finder answers:

In reality, no such people exist.

While there are many people that have personalities and actions that shift with their exterior circumstances, they do have enduring traits and ideas that they hold inside.
It is entirely impossible for a person to not have some form of preconception or framework by which they live, it just may be hard for others to figure out.

A chameleon may change the color of its skin, but it still has skin and it still has a natural color.

“Sweet Solitude,” thank you for proving my point.
You claim to have no identity, but even the act of doing so, and your repeated use of the word “choice” demonstrates that you do have a concrete identity.

Choice implies the movement of a will, that will is an identity with innate characteristics, so it is a person. You can pretend to not be like that, but even the act of pretending it contradicts the statement.
